Perfect Acai Berry Superfood

June 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Think of a superfood as one that provides more nutrition than anything else in it’s class.  In this case, fruits (and even vegetables).  The Acai Berry is classified as a fruit and can be called a superfood because it is highest in ORAC than any others tested.  ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, which is a way of measuring a food’s antioxidant capabilities.

Keep in mind that this testing is done strictly on freeze dried samples as freeze dried Acai is the absolute purest form of the berry and retains it’s highest nutrient content. Even when fresh Acai is compared to other fruits and vegetables in their original moisture laden form, Acai still scores higher ORAC than any other!

Contrary to predicted patterns however, foods that are so much lower in ORAC that Acai actually have higher amounts of complex compounds such as polyphenolics, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins.  How can this be?  To make more sense of this, the foods tested for these numbers varied in a ratio of less than 2:1 to more than 100:1 in ORAC:Complex compounds.  Most fall into the 10:1 range.  But Acai is 50:1 which is five times the norm.

You’d think the opposite would apply.  What this may mean is the antioxidants themselves found in Acai are very much stronger than those found in the other foods.  The antioxidants are much more potent by weight.  Super-potent, which makes the Acai berry a superfood.  …And this has only covered the antioxidant properties of Acai - not all the other intense nutritional Benefits of Acai as well
